The IRS requires taxpayers to file only one federal tax return, even if they had multiple jobs during the tax filing year. However, you may need to file several state returns depending on the states where you earned income. The IRS prefers that you file all overdue tax returns for years you haven't yet filed. That said, the IRS generally only requires you to file tax returns for the past six years to be considered up to date.
Even so, the IRS can go back more than six years in certain cases. Once you apply, you will receive an electronic acknowledgment that the IRS has accepted your submission.

If you use this automatic 2-month extension, you must attach to your statement a statement explaining which of the two situations allow you to request the extension. You'll still have to pay interest on any taxes you haven't paid before your return's normal due date. You can also receive an additional 4-month extension to file your return (or a total of six months) if you file Form 4868 and check the box on line 8 to indicate that you need an additional 4 months to file your return. The additional period of 4 months is not an extension of the deadline to pay.
If the automatic six-month extension is still not enough to file it, how many tax extensions can you request? You can request an additional extension to file taxes beyond the six-month period, but you cannot request multiple tax extensions. To do this, you'll need to include a letter explaining why you need an additional tax extension. Mail your letter to the address listed on Form 4868, under the heading “Where to Apply”. Each owner must submit a separate ANCHOR application. If you don't file your return, you may have to pay an additional 5% of unpaid tax for each month your tax return is delayed, up to a maximum of five months. In these cases, filing a tax return could result in a tax refund that allows you to deposit money into your bank account. This IRS only allows you to apply for tax refunds and credits within three years of the original due date of the tax return.
Form 4506-T allows you to request a transcript of your tax return information, even if you haven't filed a tax return. Review the tax forms you collect for the year of the tax return you file to make sure you are using the correct forms. It does not guarantee that customers' federal tax debt or state tax debt will be reduced by a specific amount or percentage, or that the tax debt will be settled within a specific period of time. However, the IRS only allows you to apply for tax refunds and credits within three years of the original due date of the tax return.
Self-employed people have to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes through their individual income tax returns. In addition, they must pay taxes on their unemployment benefits regardless of whether they worked during that tax year. If you don't file the return within three years of the due date, you could end up not receiving a tax refund because you can no longer apply for the lucrative tax credits or any excessive withholding from your paycheck.
